I became interested in birds at a very early age. I vividly remember the Wood Pigeons stripping my grandfather’s cabbages and brussel sprouts in the harsh winter of 1962-3. My interested was kindled by my music teacher at my junior school in Frome, Somerset. She was very interested in birds and passed her enthusiasm on to me. During my early years I worked weekends and in my school holidays at the sadly now closed Rode Tropical Bird Gardens in Somerset. For a few years my interested waned but then in the mid seventies I was back into birding with a passion, ‘twitching’ with my many friends in the Bath area. In the late seventies I discovered overseas birding and things progressed from there.
During this time, I was working for a major UK bank and as treasurer of the Blackmoor Vale RSPB group, spent all my spare time organising day trips, weekend breaks and overseas tours. Gradually, more people from other RSPB groups became interested in my tours so in 1995, I took voluntary redundancy from the bank and started the business of Birdfinders full time.
I am now in the privileged position of being able to persue my hobby as a business and to be able to travel all over the world showing people birds. All the videos were taken on such tours and give a good indication of what birdwatching is like in the respective countries.
